The eXist OpenSource XML database project, , today announces the release of version 1.4 of the eXist XML database. This release includes significant new features that make it easier for software developers to create web applications that leverage advanced native XML data storage systems.
The release includes new features such as a the integration of the Lucene document index system into the XQuery engine, key-word-in-context (KWIC) display of query results, a lightweight but powerful URL rewriting and MVC framework, automatic document versioning, as well as the integration of XProc and XForms. In addition to these new features, the XQuery engine has been redesigned to process in-memory documents as efficiently as stored documents. This is an important change for XQuery authors. eXist also has improved documentation and many new sample programs.
The eXist project was created by Wolfgang Meier in 2001 but today includes over 20 active developers from around the world. eXist is used by a broad variety of users in the areas of document management, document search and retrieval, metadata management and design-time model management. It is highly compliant with world wide web consortium (W3C) XML standards such as XQuery, XML Schema and XPath.
Native XML databases provide advanced storage and retrieval of both highly structured data as well as traditional unstructured text documents. Contact: press@exist-db.org
